My role is essentially to solve recruitment problems for teachers and schools. I’m awake at 6.30 am and between 7.00 – 8.00 am, I exclusively find solutions. I spend the rest of my day interviewing candidates, writing job adverts, filling in timesheets, organising supply and sickness cover and checking in with clients and our panel of agencies. I think my phone rings about 20 times every hour – I spend a lot of time on it!
I started my career as a teacher in South Africa after graduating with a B.Ed, then moved to London and spent four years working in primary schools. I loved teaching, but as my degree didn’t translate to having QTS, I had to find a way to stay in the world of education once my four years were up.
I started working for a corporate London recruitment agency, helping overseas teachers prepare for the UK education system and matching candidates to roles. I became a senior consultant, and then a divisional manager. However, as I grew professionally, I was also growing more and more uneasy with the values that went alongside a major national firm.
One day I happened to answer a call from The Supply Register’s Director, Baljinder, and his ethical, and transparent approach to recruitment for schools captivated me. Within two months I was working for him and now nearly three years later, I’m a Partnership Manager at The Supply Register and am so proud to be able to help schools and teachers every day.
Working at The Supply Register I can sleep well at night, knowing we are not taking money away from children who need it in the form of support or resources. The Supply Register is ethical – and that sets us apart from every other recruitment service out there.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the best thing about this role is calling back a very worried headteacher at 8.00 am and telling them you have found some cover, and they will be there in 30 minutes. You can hear the relief in their voice. Second to that is placing an amazing teacher in the environment that is best suited to them. Knowing that hundreds of children will benefit from you having found that person – that’s a priceless feeling.
