Pay and Conditions
Here we answer common questions about supply teacher pay, how and when you’ll be paid, and what benefits you’re entitled to.
A Key Information Document (KID) can be found here
Our pay rates are based on national recognised pay scales, experience, qualifications, flexibility, demand and availability.
On registering with The Supply Register, we take these aspects into account and ensure you receive a rate of pay that you are entirely satisfied with and ensures you receive the regularity of work you desire. As you won’t get paid in the holidays, the rate will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay.
We pay all staff weekly, on a Friday via PAYE, there is no umbrella company.
Payment is subject to us receiving an approved timesheet for the work completed. You can submit your timesheet and expenses (where applicable) via the tsr365 candidate portal, which you get access to when you are registered with us. The tsr365 candidate portal is also where you will receive your payslip, P60s and P45.
To enable us to process your payment, all days worked must have a corresponding timesheet authorised by a hiring manager at the school where you are working.
Timesheets for days worked must be submitted by Monday 1 pm at the latest (following week the work was completed). This will ensure you receive your payslip by Wednesday and funds into your account by Friday.
Working as a supply teacher means that you won’t get paid in the holidays. We pay a higher daily rate to account for this. For example – if your daily rate is £90, your pay slip may show your rate as £80.31 with holiday entitlement of 12.07% added on to make it £90.
In line with UK legislation, we will auto-enrol all our candidates into a workplace pension scheme providing they meet the entry criteria. As an employer, The Supply Register also contributes to the employee’s pension fund. Employees are free to opt out of the scheme once enrolled.
Support and Expectations
Here you’ll find answers to practical and career-focused questions, from taking time off and changing your availability to training opportunities and moving into permanent roles.
As standard, you should inform both the school and your Partnership Executive if you are off sick. Supply teachers may be eligible for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), as you are classed as an employee.
If you know in advance that you need time off, please request this through your Partnership Executive, even if it has already been agreed with your school. For pre-booked holidays, please inform your Partnership Executive at least four weeks in advance to allow time to arrange cover if required.
If your availability for the working week changes and you can no longer work or are now available to work extra shifts, please let your Partnership Executive know and we shall do our best to accommodate you.
We always encourage schools to interview supply staff for permanent roles, and 95% of our schools use this method to recruit. If you interview with a school and they offer you a contract, that’s great! On the date the contract is offered, the school has the option to either continue using us for supply for 12 weeks or to pay a fee to take you on a permanent contract straight away.
In most cases, the school will choose the 12-week option. This means that 12 working weeks from the contract offer date, you will move over to the school on a permanent contract. During those 12 weeks, you will remain a supply teacher and will continue to be paid by The Supply Register.
Working as a supply teacher can be a rewarding move, offering greater flexibility, control over your schedule, and the chance to explore a variety of academies, school environments, and year groups.
While it’s important to consider the financial changes and reduced security compared with a permanent role, supply work provides valuable opportunities to grow professionally, build confidence, and enjoy a better work-life balance.

The Supply Register is partnered with The National College, providing candidates with access to a broad range of online statutory learning opportunities to strengthen their professional development. At The Supply Register work can be arranged anywhere from the same day to several weeks in advance, depending on the type of booking from the school.
Same-day cover for emergency absences usually come in between 6:30 and 8:30am, while short-term planned bookings may be arranged 1–5 days ahead. Long-term and maternity cover are often organised 2–6 weeks in advance, and some roles are pre-booked for an entire term.
In the Classroom
Here we answer practical and career-focused questions, from taking time off and changing your availability to training opportunities and moving into permanent roles.
Working as a supply teacher brings many rewards, but it also presents certain challenges — from arriving at unfamiliar schools on time and navigating traffic, to supporting pupils unsettled by changes to their routine and adapting to different school cultures and values.
At The Supply Register, you’ll have a dedicated Partnership Executive on hand to support you and touch base after your first day to make sure you’re settling in well.

Mental health issues are on the rise, making it increasingly important for supply teachers to feel prepared to support pupils in the classroom. In our blog, we explore practical ways supply teachers can create an inclusive and nurturing environment that promotes positive mental health.
Supply teachers can also play to their strengths — sometimes a new, friendly face can make a real difference to children who need reassurance and support.
As a supply teacher it can be challenging to navigate the requirements of pupils with special educational needs within a very short timeframe. The school or academy will have a robust teaching and support plan in place for each pupil, supply staff will be instrumental in delivering this.
In our blog we have listed our top 5 tips to keep in mind for supply teachers working with SEN pupils.
Disruptive students are a challenge for any teacher, supply or not. The extra challenge for supply teachers comes from the fact you don’t know who the challenging children are, or the reasons behind their behaviour.
Being a supply teacher doesn’t have to mean you face disruptive behaviour challenges more than most – here are our SEVEN top tips to cope with challenging pupils:
- Set out the rules – keep them short and get the class involved in creating them
- Reward good behaviour – thank them for their cooperation and for paying attention
- Establish a positive environment – praise, encourage and challenge them to exceed goals
- Personalise learning – use a variety of different multimedia aids to inform and engage
- Use collaborative learning – team working helps build key soft skills such as communication
- Keep calm – listen to student concerns, address the situation but never lose your temper
- Have fun! Always smile and never forget that you’re inspiring the next generation
As a supply teacher you may have had many assignments at different schools over the years, detailing them all will make a cv too long. Start with your most recent work experience and then provide a brief summary of key responsibilities, and changes implemented or improvements made. Any standout challenges you have overcome in the classroom are important as well as achievements you can quantify.
Keeping your cv updated in an easy-to-read format, that highlights your school experience and skills will stand you in good stead when it comes to getting your next placement.
