Have you thought about becoming a Teaching Assistant?

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a teaching assistant (TA), it’s a lot more than just helping out in the classroom. TAs play a big part in supporting both teachers and students day to day - whether that’s helping a child with reading, setting up activities, or just being someone a student can rely on.

On a typical day, you might be setting up the classroom, working one-on-one with a student, helping with group activities, or keeping track of how children are doing. It’s a hands-on role, and you’ll be right in the middle of the action.

At The Supply Register, we are always on the lookout for TAs to join our ever-growing bank of supply staff. As we work with many Multi-Academy Trusts across the UK, we have numerous opportunities to provide regular supply work and to work with the same schools, where relationships can flourish.

“Since starting in September, I’ve been in the same school, which has been really nice because I’ve been able to settle in properly and build relationships there. I’m now just waiting to move on to a permanent contract”.

Ellie, TA

If you are a graduate looking for a first job, there are many advantages of working as a supply TA: experience in the workplace, a wide range of duties, flexible work (if still studying), work in different settings, opportunities to go from temp to perm and, more importantly, to ‘try before committing’.

“If you are looking for long-term work, I would also recommend supply teaching as opportunities to become permanent do come up, but this way it enables you to get a feel for the school before you make that commitment. All schools are run differently, and this is a perfect way to ‘try before you buy’.”

Venetia, Teacher

Joining The Supply Register as a graduate offers more benefits: work is regular, there are lots of opportunities across different multi-academy trusts, we can get you work quickly after joining, we pay weekly, and the team are very supportive.

“I regularly work 8:30-3:20 as a Teaching Assistant, mixture of work at school and off-site seeing outreach kids, interventions and helping kids get to lessons. I would recommend supply work with The Supply Register whole-heartedly, weekly pay was a game-changer and after 8 months I went from temp to perm.”

Jenny, TA

At The Supply Register, we also work with schools to provide people who can support with Special Education Needs (SEN).

Working in SEN takes patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in helping children thrive. You will be able to adapt your approach with the students, stay calm under pressure, and communicate well.

SEN staff often work closely with teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure students receive the right support both in and out of the classroom. Creativity, resilience, and strong teamwork skills are all important, especially as no two days are ever the same. If you enjoy supporting young people, building confidence, and making a real difference in a child’s development, SEN can be an incredibly rewarding area to work in.

“In a typical week, I work supporting students with a range of needs. My days involve helping with lessons and a variety of activities with students, encouraging independence, and working closely with teachers to ensure each student gets the support they need. Every day I am learning new things regarding supporting SEN students that enhancing my skills and confidence.”

A great first step into education

You don’t need years of experience to get started as a teaching assistant, making it a great option for graduates looking to gain hands-on experience in education. Most schools ask for GCSEs in English and maths; some ask for L2 or L3 Teaching Assistant qualifications. Strong communication skills, confidence working with young people, and any experience in mentoring, tutoring, volunteering, or childcare can really help you stand out.

And if you are thinking about the future, there are some great opportunities that can open up for TAs.

Specialist SEN Teaching Assistants can progress to become specialist behavioural support assistants, taking the option to study for specialist qualifications.

Some TA’s progress into HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) roles, while others decide to gain their teaching qualifications after building first-hand experience in a school.

“My suggestion for people who are thinking of working in a school setting is to choose supply, as it provides greater job flexibility, it is rewarding and a great way to gain experience.”

Khatune, TA
