Purpose of the Role
The Higher Level Teaching Assistant will play a key role in supporting high-quality teaching and learning across the school. The postholder will work collaboratively with teachers to plan, deliver, and assess learning activities, provide specialist support for individuals and groups, and contribute to raising student achievement—particularly for those with additional learning needs.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning Support

Plan, prepare and deliver learning activities under the direction of a teacher, independently leading classes or groups as required.

Contribute to the planning and evaluation of lessons, adapting resources and activities to meet the needs of learners.

Provide targeted support for pupils with SEND, EAL, or other identified needs.
-
Use a range of behaviour-management techniques in line with school policies to ensure a positive, purposeful learning environment.
Assessment & Progress
-
Monitor, assess, and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teachers and contributing to reports and reviews.
-
Support students in developing independence, confidence, and resilience in their learning.
-
Contribute to the implementation and review of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Learning Passports, and EHCP targets.
Pastoral Responsibilities

Build positive, supportive relationships with students, promoting their wellbeing, safeguarding, and personal development.

Work with pastoral staff to support pupils’ emotional, social, and behavioural progress.

Supervise students during break/lunch times, educational visits, and extracurricular activities as required.
Professional Collaboration
-
Work closely with teachers, SENCO, and other support staff to ensure consistent, high-quality provision.

Liaise effectively with parents, external agencies, and professionals when appropriate.

Contribute to staff meetings, training sessions, and INSET days.
General Duties

Uphold and promote the Catholic ethos, values, and mission of Notre Dame School.

Maintain confidentiality in accordance with school policies and GDPR requirements.

Undertake any additional duties reasonably requested by senior leaders.
Person Specification
Essential
-
HLTA status or equivalent qualification.
-
Experience working with secondary-age pupils in an educational setting.
-
Ability to lead learning independently and manage whole classes.
-
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
-
Understanding of safeguarding, SEND practices, and inclusive education.
Desirable
-
Experience delivering small-group interventions or subject-specific support.
-
Training in literacy, numeracy, ELSA, or other specialist areas.
-
Experience in a Catholic or values-driven school environment.
