Learning Mentor

ACE Bretonside is looking for a dedicated, patient and supportive 1:1 Learning Mentor to provide individualised support to learners who may need additional guidance to engage positively with their education and achieve their personal and learning goals.

The successful candidate will build positive, trusting relationships with learners, helping them to develop confidence, independence, resilience and the skills they need to make progress. You will work closely with teaching staff and other professionals to understand each learner’s individual needs and provide appropriate support both in and outside of the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consistent, personalised 1:1 support to an allocated learner.
• Build a positive, professional and trusting relationship with the learner.
• Support the learner to engage with lessons, learning activities and the wider college environment.
• Help learners develop confidence, motivation, independence and self-esteem.
• Encourage positive behaviour, attendance and engagement with learning.
• Break down tasks and learning activities into manageable steps where appropriate.
• Support learners with organisation, time management and study skills.
• Help learners identify and work towards realistic personal, educational and vocational goals.
• Encourage learners to develop strategies that enable them to become increasingly independent.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff, families/carers and relevant external professionals where appropriate.
• Share relevant observations and progress updates with the appropriate members of staff.
• Contribute to individual support plans and reviews as required.
• Maintain accurate and appropriate records of support and learner progress.
• Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and respect in all aspects of the role.
• Follow ACE Bretonside’s safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality and professional conduct procedures.
• Recognise and appropriately report any safeguarding or welfare concerns.
• Maintain professional boundaries while providing a supportive and encouraging presence.

Essential Requirements

• Experience of working with young people or adults in an educational, care, mentoring or support environment.
• A genuine commitment to helping learners overcome barriers to education.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to build positive relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
• Patience, empathy and a calm approach when supporting learners who may be experiencing challenges.
• The ability to adapt communication and support to meet individual needs.
• Good organisational skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of learners.
• The ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
• A full, valid driving licence and access to your own reliable vehicle.
• You must have appropriate business insurance in place for your vehicle, covering the use required for this role.

Desirable

• Experience providing 1:1 learning, pastoral or mentoring support.
• Experience supporting learners with additional needs, SEND, social/emotional needs or barriers to education.
• Knowledge of strategies for promoting engagement, motivation and positive behaviour.
• Relevant qualifications or training in education, youth work, mentoring, counselling, teaching assistance or a related field.
• Experience working collaboratively with teachers, families/carers and other professionals.
