Progression Mentor

Location: Tyne Coast College Group
Contract: Temporary via The Supply Register (initially until 31 October, with the likelihood of extension)
⏰ Hours: 35 hours per week (£16.28 per hour – inclusive of holiday pay)
Working Pattern: Monday to Thursday, 8:30am to 5:00pm; Friday, 8:30am to 12:30pm

This rewarding opportunity will see you working directly with learners, helping them overcome barriers to education, improve their wellbeing, and achieve their full potential.

This role is initially offered on a temporary basis until 31 October, with a strong likelihood of extension beyond this date.

About the Role

As a Progression Mentor, you will provide holistic support to learners across the college, focusing on attendance, engagement, wellbeing, and progression. You will work closely with students facing a range of challenges, including mental health difficulties, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, and caring responsibilities.

Through one-to-one mentoring, group interventions, and collaborative working with internal and external stakeholders, you will play a key role in ensuring learners remain engaged and are supported to achieve positive outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Learner Support and Engagement

• Build positive and trusting relationships with learners.
• Identify barriers to attendance, engagement and achievement.
• Develop and deliver personalised support and intervention plans.
• Monitor attendance, punctuality and academic progress, providing early intervention where necessary.

Personal Development and Wellbeing

• Plan and deliver engaging sessions on wellbeing, resilience, emotional literacy, welfare and personal development.
• Support the delivery of the college’s wider personal development programme.
• Facilitate Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) activities and events.
• Promote positive mental health, self-care and social-emotional awareness.

Safeguarding and Student Welfare

• Work closely with Safeguarding and Inclusion teams to ensure learners receive appropriate support.
• Identify and escalate safeguarding concerns in line with college policies and procedures.
• Deliver targeted wellbeing interventions and promote emotional resilience.

Fitness to Study and Learner Advocacy

• Coordinate Fitness to Study processes with fairness, professionalism and compassion.
• Attend disciplinary hearings to represent Student Services and advocate for learners.
• Support reintegration planning and ongoing support for learners returning to study.

Partnership Working

• Liaise effectively with teaching staff, support services, parents/carers and external agencies.
• Participate in multi-agency meetings and learner reviews.
• Support learners with progression and transition planning throughout their college journey.

Monitoring and Reporting

• Maintain accurate and confidential records of interventions and learner outcomes.
• Contribute to reporting and service evaluation activities.
• Use data and learner feedback to inform continuous improvement of support strategies.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

• Has experience working with young people, vulnerable learners, or individuals requiring additional support.
• Has a good understanding of mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and SEMH needs.
• Possesses excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Is confident delivering workshops and presentations to groups.
• Can manage a varied caseload and work independently when required.
• Is passionate about helping learners overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

Experience within education, youth work, social care, pastoral support, mentoring or a related field would be highly desirable.
